Highlands Hosts Community Diabetes Education Program

Prestonsburg – The diagnosis and management of diabetes is an important component of good healthcare for a large percentage of our population. Those issues were examined more closely in a recent Community Diabetes Education Program hosted by Highlands Regional Medical Center.

Highlands Diabetes Educator Debbie Ousley, said “understanding diabetes is the first step in managing acute and chronic complications during a person’s life.” Ousley said that close to 30 area residents attended the Program, where the guest speaker was Kimberly Meade, RN, with Sanofi-Aventis CDE Help Team.

Ms. Meade discussed with participants an overview of diabetes and provided information related to diagnosis and management of the disease. She stressed to those in attendance the importance of being knowledgeable about diabetes and complications which can arise from it.

Participants remarked that the information would allow them to live a better life with their diabetes. Each attendee was treated to a breakfast at Highlands Regional Medical Center and was given a bag filled with diabetes educational material. The Diabetes Program offered by the hospital is recognized by the American Diabetes Association for providing quality diabetes education on both an inpatient and outpatient basis. The Program also offers monthly education programs and, annually, Highlands sponsors a Health Fair in recognition of National Diabetes Month.
