Highlands Regional Medical Center Raises Record Amount For Relay For Life

Prestonsburg – Under the spirit of Celebrate. Remember. Fight Back: 50-plus employees of Highlands Regional Medical Center raised more than $17,000 for Relay For Life, an American Cancer Society annual event. Across the globe, countless individuals and organizations stage walks and other fundraising endeavors to battle cancer, to remember loved ones lost and to fight back against the disease. Highlands Relay for Life Team Captain, Virgil Slone, said “Relay for Life has become a tradition at Highlands, and it brings together our employees and those we serve in a common cause of raising money for a battle which must be won.”

The Floyd County Relay for Life, held Friday, June 4, at the Big Sandy Community & Technical College Walking Track, shared common threads with Relay events conducted worldwide. A Survivors Lap is an inspirational time when cancer survivors are invited to circle the track together in celebration of victories over cancer. This lap illustrates the growing ability of health care professionals to treat the disease. Additionally, a Luminaria Ceremony is held in which loved ones who have been lost to cancer are remembered, with laps walked in silence. Glowing bags circle the track, each bearing the name of a loved one lost or in honor of someone affected by cancer.

“I am proud of our Highlands team not only for the record amount of money which they raised, but for their caring spirit. It’s not only reflected in their daily job responsibilities, but also through their social conscience,” said Slone.
