October was Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Highlands Health System exercised their responsibility to educate and inform the community. From informative displays to hospital staff wearing pink gloves, Highlands did their part. However, the biggest undertaking was a Highlands’ hosted event in honor of Breast Cancer awareness.
On October 28th, Highlands held an event at Big Sandy Community & Technical College Mayo campus to educate the community on Breast Cancer prevention, detection and treatment. The event featured various speakers: Dr. Kirti Jain, Dr. Don Stacy and Stephanie VanDine, ARNP, of the Highlands Cancer Center as well as Melissa Biery, Director of Radiology and Ernest Brewer, Director of Physical Therapy- both from Highlands Health System. Tiffanie Buckner with the American Cancer Society spoke on the many programs ACS provides the community. The event organizer, Melissa Vance, Director of Community Development at Highlands, had this to say: “As an ongoing effort of Highlands Health System to educate the community regarding health issues, we understand the importance of the health events we host. We know that empowering individuals with knowledge regarding healthcare issues is of utmost importance and vital in making a difference in the lives of those we serve.”
