Highlands welcomes Dr. Joel A. Shapiro to Highlands Heart & Vascular Center. Dr. Shapiro, a Brooklyn native, received his PhD from Purdue University, his MD from the University of Miami and completed his residency at the University of San Diego. Additionally, he has received multiple board certifications through the American Board of Internal Medicine, the National Board of Medical Examiners and the American College of Cardiology. He has also received numerous professional awards and honors from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, the National Institutes of Health and the Division of Medical Genetics among many others. Dr. Shapiro has also taught and advised with many well respected universities and has 40 years of experience in the medical field with a wide range of professions including research scientist, geneticist, consultant and more.
Dr. Shapiro comes to Eastern Kentucky to serve the Big Sandy region as a Cardiologist for Highlands Health System and will be located at the Highlands Heart and Vascular Center. The center is set to open on January 23rd on the third floor of the Highlands Medical Office Building in Prestonsburg. Services offered will include cardiac cath, cardiac CT, echocardiography, stress testing, EKG, holter monitoring, nuclear imaging, and peripheral arterial disease management among many others.
