Highlands Regional Medical Center forms new
Philanthropic Corporation for Promoting Healthcare
Many of the programs available at Highlands Regional Medical Center would not be here today, for you and your family, without the generous support of people you probably don't even know. People who have generously reached out to make a difference in the lives of others and by doing so have helped the newborn baby with special care needs, a confused elderly patient with yet another set of special care issues, or given someone a new lease on life by helping to provide care that cured a life threatening disease. Most people in our country want to help others and make a difference that will improve their community - its part of the American spirit of giving. Because healthcare is critical to the fabric of any community, supporting the work of the Medical Center strengthens the entire region. To support the need for expanded healthcare services for the area, Consolidated Health Systems, the parent corporation of Highlands Regional Medical Center, has formed a new non profit corporation, Highlands Foundation, Inc.
The Foundation will work to promote philanthropic support of the Medical Center and provide support to other charitable entities in eastern Kentucky, for the purpose of promoting health, establishing programs of community education and involvement, and development of community services. The communities surrounding the Medical Center have been supporting the hospital since it opened in 1973. Throughout the years, the Medical Center's role in improving the health of area residents has been evident in the work they do saving lives, providing diagnosis and treatment of diseases, and in preventing diseases and injuries. Because Highlands Regional Medical Center is a non-profit community hospital, they provide healthcare services to all regardless of a patient's ability to pay. Highlands Foundation will work to help the hospital fund new technology, community outreach programs, support groups and capital building projects to improve and expand inpatient and outpatient services for residents in the communities we serve.
Kathy Rubado, former Director of Marketing and Public Relations at HRMC has been named to head the Foundation and will serve as the Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer. Rubado is a graduate of Indiana University in Indianapolis, Indiana. She is a life long resident of the area and is familiar with the people and many of the opportunities for improvement that can be achieved by working together to improve healthcare services to the community.
Highlands Foundation, Inc. is currently in its organizational phase developing goals and objectives. Board members and Volunteers from the community will soon be invited to become involved with various programs being planned by the Foundation. Many hospitals throughout the country have non profit foundations to help them secure the necessary funds to provide improvements in healthcare to the community. These hospitals, historically, have enjoyed higher growth and expansion of services due to the impact of philanthropic support by the community.
One of the most valuable possessions a human being can have is good health. Without good physical health quality of life is significantly reduced. People who tour the Medical Center for the first time and meet members of the staff and see their commitment, often comment, "We had no idea this level of healthcare service was available in the area." They leave with a new perspective about what is possible for further improving healthcare in the community. One example is Highlands' Cancer Center and the advanced radiation oncology and chemotherapy services as well as medical specialists available to provide the latest in cancer diagnosis and treatment. Almost everyone knows someone or has had a member of their family diagnosed with some form of cancer. Until Highlands' Cancer Center opened, people often had to leave the area and drive long distances for cancer care. Now that same high quality cancer care is available right here in our community.
By working together, Highlands Foundation and people in eastern Kentucky can accomplish big things, provide new services, bring new specialists to the area and make a real difference in the level of healthcare available for our families. Donations to Highlands Foundation are tax deductible and your contribution, no matter how large or small, will stay in your community and make a difference in improving healthcare services for you and your family.
