Highlands Announces Annual Golf Classic

June 14, 2018
Prestonsburg, KY – The Highlands Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Highlands Health System, will host the 2018 Highlands Golf Classic on August 30th and 31st at StoneCrest Golf Course in Prestonsburg. The charity golf event, in its 21st year, has evolved to become one of the premier golfing events in the state, attracting local participants as well as those from other states as far away as Texas and California. The Golf Classic is a two day event limited to 40 teams each day. At the tournament, golfers can play choose to play one or both days for maximum fun and relaxation. The tournament is played as a four member team scramble offering fun for all, from the less experienced to the avid golfer.

This year’s proceeds, after tournament expenses, will be used to purchase two Optimum-UV Enlight robots for use at Highlands Regional Medical Center. The Enlight system uses short-wavelength ultraviolet radiation to kill microorganisms (like bacteria, fungus, and viruses) and inactivate pathogens on hospital surfaces. In laboratory testing, the Enlight robot has been proven to reduce viruses such as Hepatitis, Influenza, Rhinovirus, Norovirus and many others within five minutes. It also kills bacteria like Clostridium Difficile (C-Diff) and Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus (MRSA) that are contagious and easily spread.

In previous years, proceeds from the charity event have funded scholarships for students at the Highlands Center for Autism and needed healthcare projects at Highlands. Susan Ellis, Highlands’ Vice President of Patient Services, believes that additional Enlight systems will help the hospital better protect patients from infectious diseases, especially those that are drug-resistant. “The Enlight system, used along with standard cleaning and disinfection, allows us to provide the best, safest care possible for our patients. We currently have one on-site for use in patient areas, but require additional robots for our Emergency Department and Surgery” said Ellis.

The Highlands Golf Classic planning committee is currently accepting sponsorships at many levels as well as in-kind donations, and is registering teams for the event. To become a personal or corporate sponsor or to register for play, contact Karen Sellers at 606-886-7606.
