Highlands Hosts Mamm's Day Out

July 6, 2018
Prestonsburg, KY – For the second year in a row, Highlands partnered with UK Healthcare Markey Cancer Center to host Mamm’s Day Out, a free mammography screening event for women in the Big Sandy region on Saturday, June 23rd. The event targets women who are uninsured or under-insured, or those in need of a Saturday appointment. Along with a free mammogram, women were also educated on breast cancer and provided the opportunity to register for take-home colon cancer screening kits.
Sixteen women were screened at Mamm’s Day Out. Among those was Kathy Ramey, a Floyd county native who, due to her lack of health insurance, hadn’t had a mammogram in over 10 years. “I appreciated everything so much. The girls who helped with the event were so sweet and made the experience great. I will be coming back next year,” Ramey said.
Mamm’s Day Out also assists women who hold full-time jobs during the week and aren’t able to schedule mammograms during the work day. Adonna Goode, another participant, attended for that very reason. “I was grateful that a Saturday screening event was available because it was convenient with my work schedule,” Goode said. “I was very pleased with my experience.”
One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, which is why it is recommended for any woman over 40 years of age to have regular breast cancer screenings for early detection. Screening mammograms are the most effective way of detecting breast cancer, and can find cancer earlier when it is easier to treat. While family history is important to determine your recommended screening age, it is essential for those without a family history of breast cancer to be screened as well. Nine out of ten women that are diagnosed with breast cancer do not have a family history.
